When I was a child I read about the "Three monkeys of Gandhiji". Gandhi's Three Monkeys is a series of sculptures created by Indian artist Subodh Gupta. The sculptures recall a visual metaphor from India's famous champion of peace, Mahatma Gandhi, of the "Three wise monkeys", representing the principle "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil".
It is the cry of every heart that they should live a good life but often it seems very much impossible to live a holy and pure life. I heard that most of those who make new year resolutions are unable to keep up their promises even up to two-three weeks of the first month. Yes, it is almost impossible to maintain and proceed according to the resolutions by themselves. I also heard that people who are addicted to smoking or drinking try and try but never get rid of those habits. Sometimes they are able to quit smoking or drinking for a few days or weeks but the habit returns in their lives.
Peter who was one of the disciples of Jesus writes in 1 Peter 3:21-22 & in 1 Peter 4:1-3 that there is hope for sinners and for those who are in addictions because Jesus died for our sins and took all our sins on Himself. Peter urges fellow believers in 1 Peter 4:2-3, "that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles; when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries."
The same Peter who lived a bad lifestyle, the same Peter who denyed Jesus thrice, now takes a stand against the bad life style he indulged in. 1 Peter 4:1, "Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin."
So how could Peter live a holy life? How could he get rid of those addictions of lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries?
In Acts 2:38-39, 'Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call."'
He also says in Acts 3:19 "Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord."
We see one thing that is common in his prechings that we need to repent from our sins and fall at the feet of Jesus and then only our sins can be forgiven. And when our sins are forgiven, we become a new creation as we read in 2 Cor 5:17, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
Yes, there is restoration, there is deliverence from sins and addictions through Jesus Christ. If you come to Jesus, if you ask Jesus in your heart today, He will not only forgive your sins but also give you a new life that makes you to long to live a holy life. More than that He will give you eternal life so that you could live with Him forever. Would you repent today from your sins and turn to Jesus?
Great Mothers of the Bible
By Sherly Isaac
In the Bible we read about many women who played great rolls in shaping their children and making them to walk in the ways of God.
One of the women is Naomi. Naomi and her family trusted in the Lord but it happened that there was famine in the land of Israel where they lived. So Naomi and her family decided to go to nearby country called Moab. How many years they lived there, we do not know but Bible tells us that one by one Naomi's husband and two sons died. Now Naomi and her two daughters-in-law remained. But it seems that Naomi would have often told them about the awesome and mighty God of Israel. She alone introduced the God of Bible to Ruth.
One day Naomi decides to leave Moab and return to her own land - the land of her ancestors. When she was on the way, she requested both of her daughters-in-law to go back to their parent's houses. Finally Orpah went back but Ruth clung to Naomi. And Naomi told her in Ruth 1:15, "Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law." Then Ruth replied to her in Ruth 1:16-17, "Entreat me not to leave you, Or to turn back from following after you; For wherever you go, I will go; And wherever you lodge, I will lodge; Your people shall be my people, And your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, And there will I be buried. The LORD do so to me, and more also, If anything but death parts you and me."
Here we see the determination of Ruth to follow Naomi and her God. And because she followed the God of the Bible, God exalted her and blessed her life. She had the privilege to become great grandmother of David who walked in the ways of God and later Jesus came through her lineage.
There was another young mother who walked in the ways of God in righteousness and in holiness. And God chose her to be an instrument to bring the Son of God in this world. One day Mary heard the news that Messiah would be born to her. It was the moment that every person in Israel waited for, the birth of the Son of God who was about to take away the sins of the world who was about to remove the darkness and bring light in this world. That moment finally arrived and Jesus came in this world. Though He was God Himself, yet He was subject to his parents as we read in Luke 2:51-52, "Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men."
Even at the time of His own great trouble when He was hanging on the cross and dying yet He did not forget Mary His mother. In John 19:26-27 we read, "When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, "Woman, behold your son!" Then He said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home."
The same God cares for us and He wants to wipe away our tears just as a mother who brings consolation and comfort to her children. He wants to be with us as a mother and as a father. He loved us so much that He came down in this world to die for us and gave His precious life for us. Today we can get forgiveness of our sins by coming at the feet of Jesus repenting from our sins. He is ready to forgive and forget all our sins and give us a new life. He wants to adopt us as His own child. Would you come at the feet of Jesus and become God's child, today?
