What is Good Friday? Probably it was the most horrific, shameful and cruel day when the creator of the universe had to die such a humiliating death that we now know as Good Friday. It was a death that is completely humbling. Why anybody should die such a horrific death? And what good that death will bring? Because the crime of humanity is so great that the creator Himself had to take such a drastic step in order to reverse death and destruction awaiting the entire humanity and to reconcile them with God.

When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, their sin brought death and destruction in this world. Death brought separation from God and from His holy presence. Even today if you continue in sin, death awaits for you - eternal death which will eternally separate you from God. But God made a way for us so that we may not die and we may not go to hell. In Isaiah 53:4-11, we read, "Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. And they made His grave with the wicked; But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth. Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand. He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities."

And in John 3:15-17, "that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved."

By giving Himself to die Jesus took our punishment on Himself. The penalty for our sins, the horrific death and destruction which we had to face because of our sins, He took over Himself and died for us. By His precious blood He paid the penalty of our sins in full. We do not need to die anymore but we can come at His feet and receive the free gift of salvation. His death on the cross, His pure blood that was shed on the cross is the only solution to escape from death and destruction of our lives. Would you come to Jesus and accept Him as your Lord and Savior today?

Victory over Death

By Sherly Isaac

When we celebrate Easter, we think about the great victory of Jesus over death. This was the greatest victory that ever happened in the history of mankind. This victory wasn't a small one. Death is painful and no one ever defeated death except Jesus who resurrected from the dead and is still alive.

In the past few years we had an encounter with death face to face as my dad was dying in the hospital. Though we knew that if he dies, he will be going to heaven still it was very hard on us to go through it. Death is a terrible thing and the same frustration was felt by the disciples of Jesus in their hearts when they saw Jesus dying on the cross. They could not believe that their beloved master was hanging on the cross, bleeding all over, mocked by people. Their hearts were filled with grief, pain, sorrow and fear. They were facing an uncertain future. They did not know what would happen next. Their hearts were failing and they hid themselves in a room.

You can see what death do to people? It brings great despair and heartbreak in the lives of people. But I have Good News for you! Jesus won victory over death and because He lives we can live also.

And what a reversal in their sadness and sorrows when they saw that Jesus rose up from the dead! Once again they could not believe. They were ecstatic. At first Mary Magdalene had the news and she could not content to herself. She ran to tell the Good News and as we read in scripture she told the disciples. Luke 24:6-11, "He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, "saying, 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.'" And they remembered His words. Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. And their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them. But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened.

The news was so amazing for the disciples that Peter and John also ran to the tomb to examine themselves as we read in John 20:3-4, "Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first."

Their hearts were filled with great joy and peace seeing that their beloved master was alive. It changed their sorrows to joy. What a difference it made when they heard that Jesus was alive. If death is painful life is the opposite of it. It is wonderful to know that a person is alive and well. But more than that it is wonderful to know that Jesus took death on Himself so that we may not die but live forever.

He wants to give us eternal life. He wants to protect us from slipping into eternal death. Jesus paid the price for our salvation in full. Would you come to Him and receive His eternal life today?

Happy Easter!!
